Meet Fr. Mark Augustine | Asst. Vocations Director, Formations

My name is Fr. Mark Augustine.  This past summer I began my new assignment as Formation Faculty and Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions at Saint Joseph College Seminary.  Prior to this assignment I had served as the Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Ransom parish in Niles, IL.  I am beginning my fourth year of priesthood, having been ordained in May, 2013.

Some of my areas of interest include Mariology and Spirituality.  I am an avid Scouter with the Boy Scouts of America, celebrating 25 years with the organization this Fall.  I am the youngest of three children and my family grew up in and around the Chicagoland area.

It is a great joy to start my work here forming these great young men as they continue to discern God’s call for them in their life.  I pray that my ministry here will be fruitful for all those I serve.

How did you know you were called to become a priest?

I studied at the JFRC (John Felice Rome Center) my spring semester of senior year.  While there I went on a pilgrimage with 2 others to Medjugorje and it was there where I first felt called by God to be a priest.  I actually asked in prayer what he wanted me to do, and a stained glass window lit up from the sun depicting a priest.  I returned from the pilgrimage and began proper discernment while still studying in Rome.  When I returned home, I met with our vocation director, and the rest is history.

Where do you find God each day?

Daily celebration of the Eucharist.  Rosary walks when its nice out.

If you could have 5 minutes with Pope Francis, what would you talk about?

Are his pj's long white robes as well or does he wear a white stocking cap to bed? If not, what does he wear when sleeping?  Also I'd ask where the best views in Rome are, since I'd probably have a better chance of seeing those again than getting a 1 on 1 with the Holy Father (Hey, I only have 5 minutes).

To what saints do you have a devotion?

St. Theresa of Avila, St. George, St. Therese of Liseuax, St. Raphael, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. JP II

On your day off, what do you like to do?

Do a good workout, read, sleep in, go to the movies and play Settlers of Catan.

What is your favorite Catholic joke?

A priest is in the confessional and he hears a penitent come in on the other side.  Nothing happens.  He clears his throat and still nothing.  Finally he knocks on the partition and hears in response "Its no use, there's no TP on this side either."

Cubs or Sox?

Cubs, you know what they say, the 108th time's the charm.

Where is your secret super power (hobby works too)?

What's your guilty pleasure?

Netflix of old cartoons on Skype with my best friend who lives in California.

What is your favorite food?

I eat to live, not live to eat.  Although I do like a good burger.

Favorite TV Show/Movie/Cartoon.

Hmm.. thats a tough one.  I really like Band of Brothers.

Is Pluto a planet or not?

I own a book called "Would you baptize an extraterrestrial?"  One of the chapters deals with the official demotion of Pluto.  Basically, the classification really only matters to a lot of astronomers, but to me, its still a planet since its a valid answer of  the"planets" category in Outburst (although, so is "Vulcan," so who knows?)

What are you most excited about this school year?

Starting off a new assignment, figuring all of those new elements out.  It will be very interesting to get to try out a variety of things and see what really works.  Plus the entire shift into formation and just looking at a variety of possibilities.
