Pray Hard, Play Hard
This past weekend, Saint Joseph College Seminary played in the 17th Annual Father Pat O’Malley Invitational. 16 seminaries from all over the United States gathered in Chicago for the annual basketball tournament hosted by Mundelein Seminary.
Saint Joseph College Seminary was the only minor seminary represented at the tournament, but it didn't deter us from bringing our A-Game.
Unfortunately, our best did not even remotely came close to the skills of the other seminaries. Our young, small and scrappy team could not outmatch the bigger and older seminarians that we were matched up with.
Boxed out and a foot shorter than those we were matched up with, we struggled to maintain ball control and trailed early in each game. However, there was hope beyond the arc as Micah Ventura (Archdiocese of Chicago, '19), Kevin Tanel (Archdiocese of Milwaukee, '19) and Jeevan James (Diocese of St. Thomas-Malabar, '18) were letting it rain from downtown to bring our deficient to a slight more respectable score.
The highlight of the tournament, at least for us, was our dedicated cheer squad. Half the seminary came to the tournament to cheer their brothers on. They brought delight and laughter to our players and everyone else present.
Though we went 0-3 in the tournament. We had a great time playing and praying with our brother seminarians from across the country. And if anyone asked how we did, we can honestly answered, "We tried."
