Event Review: Seminary Salutes 2018
Our annual Seminary Salutes event is our largest event of the year. Friends, family and community all join together to recognize local individuals for their leadership and service in government/public service, labor and business. It's an opportunity to recognize the various achievements of Catholic Chicago citizens and their exemplary promotions of the Church's social teachings within their field. The annual tradition was actually inspired by Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum, which celebrated the dignity of human labor and the right to organize and to have a living wage. At St. Joseph College Seminary, we ultimately aim to celebrate the great value of the worker in the eyes of God.
By uniting our seminarians with the larger, local Catholic community, we're able to show our dedication to deepening our relationships with Christ, share our faith and give others a good look into our lives at the seminary. The night was filled with great food and drink, community socializing and several people were given special awards for their service to the community. Our seminarians were excited not only to meet those outstanding citizens, but also to help facilitate the event. As one of our first-year seminarians, Goodwin Francis noted,
"my favorite part of Seminary Salutes was meeting and interacting with so many of our fantastic supporters. It gave me a lot of opportunities to express my gratitude to them and have interesting conversations."
This year's Rerum Novarum honorees were:
Labor: Mr. James Allen, President, Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Administrative District Council 1
Business: Mr. Thomas Kiley, CEO, Great Lakes Advisors
Government/Public Service: Mr. Timothy McCarthy, Chief of Police, Orland Park Police Department
Additionally, Betsy Bohlen, Chief Operating Officer of the Archdiocese of Chicago received the Mater Dei Award.
Congratulations to this year’s award recipients!
